LEWISTON – Event planners have been hard at work making the June 23, 2013 Bands on the Run Half Marathon, 5K and Kids’ Fitness Course a memorable event for participants and spectators alike. The event will have even more popular bands to provide a pulsating beat for all runners!  “The courses have been modified to enhance runners’ experience,” notes Mike Lecompte, co-race director. “We’re including more trails that offer great views of the Androscoggin River.”  Proceeds from the event benefit the work and mission of Museum L-A, from innovative children’s programs to special community exhibits to preserving our local history. It is one of the museum’s largest fundraisers.

More food, music, dancing and a festival of fun will await participants at the finish line in Simard-Payne Park.  This year there will be two Party Zones on the race course where spectators will be treated to refreshments, music, karaoke, rock band competitions and good cheer. The inaugural event in 2012 brought in almost 1,000 participants traveling from as far away as Scotland and Hawaii. Registration is now under way at www.bandsontherunhalf.com, with discounted prices for runners who sign up early. This already has become a popular event!  Early registration results seem to be projecting double the participation from last year.

The Half-Marathon start is at 8 a.m. and is a 13.1 mile run along city streets, country roads, park paths and trails that follow the Androscoggin River and run through the historic Twin Cities of Lewiston and Auburn. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. runners and walkers in the 5K will follow a course that includes the downtown business districts of Lewiston and Auburn.  Children, from ages 5 to 12, may participate in the Kids’ Fitness Course from 9-11 a.m. This will be a self-paced, non-timed, event where the goal is to complete the course while giving children a great opportunity to exercise. A $5 entry fee will be charged per child with free scholarships available upon request at the start of the course. Children who complete the course will be given a shirt as a finisher’s prize. A parent or legal guardian will be required to sign a waiver on race day.

Bands, several of which are back from last year, will be stationed at selected sites along the course.  Some of the lineup includes the Repeat Offenders, Ron Bergeron, PopRocks, Eyes Set West, and newcomers, Full Circle Rocks. The public is invited to cheer on runners, listen to music and to PLAY at the “Party Zones” which will be located at the The Gym on Main Street, at Pedro O’Hara’s, and at the finish line in Simard-Payne Park where there will be an awards ceremony to recognize the top finishers.

Returning as race co-directors are Lecompte and Erik Boucher of GiddyUp Productions.  Committee members include: Regina Catterson (Museum L-A),  Jane Clavet, George Gendron,  Amy Hediger, David Hediger, Disa Fedorowicz-Drews, Kelly St. Hilaire, Alina Burke, Penny Gimpell, Richard LaFontaine, Ed Desgrosseilliers, Jeff Allen, Michelle Twitchell, and Amber Waterman.

Bands on the Run is made possible by the generosity of many supporters, including its lead sponsor Electricity Maine as well as Pediatric Associates, Cabot Creamery, the Boston Red Sox and more!
