Museum L-A event rekindles Peck’s holiday traditions

LEWISTON – Do you remember sitting on Santa’s lap at B. Peck’s department store and “fishing” for a special toy? Well, Museum L-A is bringing the Peck’s tradition back to life as part of its Old Fashioned Holiday Celebration at the Museum from 12 Noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 8.  Santa and the “fish pond” will be at Museum L-A along with the Great Falls Railroad Club, which will help to recreate the model train that was a staple of Peck’s Christmas display.  A “Guess Who?” wall of photographs from the 1940s through the 1970s will feature local youngsters visiting with Santa at Pecks.  “We are delighted at the response we’ve had from the community as the buzz has spread and the photos are pouring in,” said Rachel Desgrosseilliers, Museum L-A’s Executive Director. “We’ll be taking them until December 3, so check your attics!”

The event will have many features that are part of the community’s collective memory, including period decorations and displays reflecting a variety of traditions in Lewiston-Auburn. It is an opportunity to take in the Museum’s Power of Music exhibit as well as enjoy an afternoon of music, light refreshments, and fun for all ages. Rekindle memories and make new ones.  Remember the glittering Christmas tree at Gooseberry Barn?  Come and enjoy it again – or for the first time.  A Fontanini® Creche will be set up as well as displays from our Jewish and Greek Orthodox communities. PhotoFinish will be on hand to take photos of children with Santa.

“Museum L-A is all about preserving cherished memories and creating new ones,” Desgrosseilliers continued. “Here’s an opportunity for generations to connect once again in a new and special tradition.”Museum L-A’s Power of Music exhibit explores the importance of music in the lives of our ancestors; come and enjoy a gathering similar to one they would have had in their homes in which music was the focal point.  Professional and amateur musicians are invited to bring their instruments with them for the afternoon to take part in an informal ‘jam session’ with fellow musicians.  Museum L-A’s own piano will be available for anyone who wants to play some songs or maybe sing some carols.

Come to the celebration to relive your Peck’s experience and bring the children and grandchildren along to learn about your holiday traditions growing up!  Admission is $5.00, with children 6 and under free.
